Main Itinerary: Overview & Planning Guide
After yesterday’s sun-drenched cruise along the flat river tracks, Day 3 throws us right into the rolling, dramatic heart of the valley. The weather held up beautifully again, illuminating the steep, velvety green hillsides as we headed across the river to explore a mix of ultra-modern luxury and hidden mountain gems.
The Macallan Estate
We started the morning by pedaling over the river to The Macallan Estate. The scale of this place is jaw-dropping. It is a massive, sprawling piece of land that perfectly blends ultra-sleek, modern architecture into the natural contours of the hills.
As you cycle up the pristine driveway, you’ll pass beautiful historic manor houses juxtaposed against a main building that looks like a futuristic, grass-roofed subterranean wave. Out front, a fleet of high-end luxury Bentleys is usually parked, highlighting the premium vibe of the estate. It feels completely different from any other stop on the trail—less like a dusty old distillery and more like a high-end luxury resort. Even if you don’t have a tour booked, just biking through the grounds and exploring the public visitor exhibition is an incredible experience.
Glenallachie Distillery
Leaving the luxury of Macallan behind, we navigated a short, 2.5-mile stretch down into a lovely, quiet valley to find Glenallachie Distillery. Glenallachie is a spectacular contrast to Macallan. It has a wonderful, welcoming, and down-to-earth independent distillery atmosphere. Their visitor center features a fantastic (and a very cosy) tasting room bar where you can pull up a stool, relax after a bit of riding, and sample some of their highly acclaimed, deeply sherried single malts. The staff here love chatting with active travelers, making it a super fun, laid-back spot to break up the day.
Benrinnes Distillery
To wrap up Day 3, we pointed our bikes toward the looming peak of Ben Rinnes to visit Benrinnes Distillery. Benrinnes sits in a spectacular, isolated position with sweeping, dramatic views looking back down across the entire valley. Standing high up in the crisp mountain air, looking out over the landscape we just cycled through, was the perfect way to finish the loop.
Aberlour Distillery
After a lovely bike ride we headed to Aberlour. However, they dont have a bar room. You are able to try their whiskies only if you have a booked tour, which unfortunately we didnt. Anyways, we walked around their visitors center and it was a nice way to round off a lovely sunny biking day.
